Finishing Strong

Finishing Strong

To say this school year has had a few bumps and bruises along the way would be… Well, no one would believe me.  Having a 3 year old (during our school time) is proving to be more of a challenge for me than I could have imagined.  I had all these wonderful plans of how I would bring Boo into Roo’s school time (just Tater Tot style).  She was going to be my little sponge and just soak it all up.  And we would finish our formal school day with a little song and dance.

Okay, I do know that that sounds absolutely crazy to anyone who has been homeschooling more than one child for more than one year.  But I truly did think this!

She was so sweet and easy while she was a newborn.  She nursed, slept, repeat.  The next year she was into things while I was teaching but I could mostly redirect her and she was more than happy to “write” every time Sissy was.  This year… Let’s just say none of the old tricks (or new ones I’ve tried) are working.  She is most definitely her own little person – with a HUGE personality!

I love her to pieces and I promise I’m not complaining about her.  My complaint is with ME!  I am a scheduled-organized-list making-OCD-type A person.  My hubby would tell you to the extreme (the poor man).  For me I need to have things organized and scheduled.  Literally, I will lose my mind and not be able to focus at all.  So when this sweet little face  helps our day go off track my focus tends to go with it.

Now here we are May 1st and our school year – our schedule – is totally off track.  Off my track!  I will admit, inside I am totally screaming “ARE YOU KIDDING ME!”  But I realize she is only 3yo and I know that this schedule was my schedule.  I had us finishing up by May 22nd and just having nothing but fun for the summer.  I can tell you the due date will not be met.

So how can I actually finish this school year strong?

First, I am giving myself permission to extend my due date.  Wait, let me rephrase that – I am telling myself we will finish when my little chix are ready to be finished and we are going to have fun doing it!

Because I know this change will only appease me for so long I have decided to change up how we school.

  • First off, we are starting our day with a work out and Bible Study!  We are going to strengthen our bodies along side our faith.  Plus the work out helps bring Boo into focus as much as a 3yo can.
  • Next, we are studying one subject until it is complete for the year and then moving on to the next!  Since it is what we think of as “the end of the school year” I think it is important to feel the sense of completion.  Now we can feel it again and again.
  • Last, field trips will be incorporated weekly.  Even if this just means we take nature walks around our allotment – that’s what we will do!  Something to break it up and not become trapped in the house all summer long.

It’s definitely not the picture I had in mind for this school year.  It has definitely made me question my ability to homeschool my girls.  But the more I question, worry, ponder and pray the more the Lord speaks to me and saying:

I am teaching you while you are teaching your girls.

Trust me.

Put your faith in me.

Let me show you the way.  This is how you finish this school year strong!

Have you ever worried about how you will ever finish a school year?

How did you in the end – finish strong?
