An Excellent Wife Makes an Excellent Husband

We are continuing our look at the excellent wife’s activities.

  • What did she do that made her so wonderful?
  • What actions should we be teaching our daughters to strive for?
  • What was important to the Proverbs 31 Woman?

Proverbs 31:23-24{ESV}

Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.  She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchants.

Her Behavior {Biblical Times}

A man’s reputation started at home.  If his home was well kept and his family honorable then so too was he.  This Excellent Wife not only brought honor to her husband’s reputation but she was so diligently looking after their home, family, and finances, that he never had to give them a second thought.  She left him no reason to worry about the things she took care of, he could completely focus on his business and presence in the community.

Once she finished with her everyday activities – all that she did to take care of her family.  She took the time to make clothing and linens to sell.  It was also important to her that she contributed in some way to her family financially.  But this wasn’t her first priority – her family and home came first.

So how should our behavior look TODAY?

Keeping a clean, organized and peaceful home life for our husband is obviously very important. Ask your husband how you can help make his day better when he comes home.  Make sure our priorities are in order:  Keeping the house tidy, the kids’ school done, good healthy meals prepared, contributing financially to the family somehow.  But making sure we don’t forget Proverbs 31:13 “She works with willing hands.”  Don’t just “go through the motions” or do it with a heavy heart.  Do these things, to take care of your family, because you love and want to care for them.

How do we teach this to our daughters?

About an hour before my husband is due home from work the girls and I make sure the house is nice and tidy.  I tell them “It’s time to clean up for Daddy!” and they happily do so!  Now, any other time I tell them it’s time to put their toys away I usually get some (or a lot depending on the day) of groans and complaining.  But I have told my girls and remind them often, that we do this so when their Daddy walks in the door he thinks “Boy I’m glad to be home!”  If our home was messy and all crazy looking do you think he would be very excited to come home?  Nope!  So we turn on our iTunes and Rock out while we clean up for Daddy!

When my oldest was little, she really wanted to spill the beans, of all the “bad things” that happened during the day, as soon as my hubby walked through the door.  She tries to give him the whole rundown of all the time outs, rude words and disobeying she and her sister had done throughout the day.  Yes – she really did actually tell on herself!  So we have also made the rule that we need to let Daddy unwind for a bit BEFORE we jump him!  She needed to wait until Daddy asks her what all happened today!  I want them to see that it is important for their Dad to be able to come home and relax!

When it comes to my blogging and businesses Mary & Martha, Beautycounter and Sweet Chix VA, I have given myself office hours.  I am an Obsessive Compulsive Person, and if I don’t set a schedule and limits for myself then the work side will totally take over!  This can be a real struggle for me and is something I need to constantly remind myself – God, family, home, charity comes first – Blogging and business I work on when everything else is complete!  It’s all about being organized and focused!

So how will YOU begin to show your daughters these behaviors? What can YOU share with us that is working for you?

*Monday we will continue with more of her behavior in Proverbs 31:25-26*
