Hearty Family Chili Recipe

Okay, I have finally remembered to take photos while cooking our chili dinner!  Seriously – we eat this all winter long and I’m just NOW sharing it!  Yikes!

So you will see that I really like to make my Chili as lean and low sodium as possible.  If we’re going to eat it all the time I want it to be as healthy as it can be.  But some times it’s difficult finding the low sodium seasonings (like right now for me).  So if you can find them substitute what I had to use for the low sodium taco seasoning and chili seasoning.  I’ve chosen the brands that I have here, to keep the chili from getting to spicy hot for my little chix.

It’s pretty basic ingredients:  3lbs of ground Turkey, 2 large cans of Muir Glenn Fire Roasted Tomatoes, Black Beans, Pinto Beans, Taco Seasoning, Chili Seasoning, Onion Powder, V8 low sodium, and 1pkg of frozen corn (not shown here because I totally forgot to add the corn until an hour before dinner).

I like to add half of the seasoning and onion powder to the meat while it cooks.  I feel like you get the flavor to the seasonings better this way.

While the meat is cooking I start up my crock-pot (set to cook at least 4hrs).  I add in all of my tomatoes, black beans, pinto beans and the rest of the seasoning and onion powder.

Once the meat is fully cooked add it to the crock-pot and stir it in.  Then add the V8 juice to fill the crock-pot the rest of the way.  Then cover and cook for at least 4hrs (the longer the better in my opinion).

Dinner Time!  Serve up in your chili bowls (let cool for a little while) and top with your family’s favorite chili fixin’s!  We like to add our oyster crackers and beer cheese dip (when we have it made already).

I hope that you and your family enjoy this hearty chili!!!

    1. Thank you! It’s all about getting natural light. The photos of the chili in the bowl so not as good as the making of the chili. I just told my hubby last night I want to replace our light bulbs with “natural light” ones. Lol I’m sure he’ll jump right on that! 😉
